How to Find a Job as a Recent Graduate

Last modified: 08. July 2024

As a recent graduate without much professional experience, you can't rely on recruiters to come to you. You'll need to be proactive in your job search. Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities available if you know where to look.

Start on Campus

You don’t need to look far; start right here on campus! The Centre for Student Services hosts the annual Job Fair and Career Day, featuring informative lectures and company stands. Here, you can chat with company representatives, hand in your CV, and even participate in on-the-spot interviews.

You can also explore the Centre for Student Services section (in Hungarian: Hallgatói Szolgáltatások Központ) on the university’s website, karolyrobertcampus.uni-mate.hu. Under the ‘Gyakorlati és álláslehetőségek' section, you'll find organisations that have reached out to our campus specifically to offer internships and job positions to Károly Róbert Campus students.

Navigating Online Job Searches

The internet is a vast resource for job hunting, extending far beyond Facebook job ads and sites like allas.jofogas.hu. The following list contains some Hungarian sites as well, but don’t worry. Whenever a company is looking for an English-speaking candidate, they’ll post the ad in English. So, here’s how to make the most of the internet:

  • Major Job Portals: Websites like profession.hu, CVonline.hu, and jobline.hu offer a wide range of job listings. Additionally, you can check out recruitment agencies like humanfield.hu and bap.hu for more options.
  • Specialised Job Portals: Sites like frissdiplomas.hu (specifically for recently graduated professionals), kozszolgallas.ksz.gov.hu (specifically for those looking for jobs in the public sector), and turizmus.com (specifically for tourism and hospitality students) provide targeted job listings in specific fields.
  • Aggregator Sites: These sites compile job listings from various sources, making it easier to search through a large number of opportunities. The most prominent ones include allasportal.hu, jooble.org, jobinfo.hu, and indeed.com.

LinkedIn and Other Tips

Creating and maintaining a LinkedIn profile is crucial. Ensure your profile is detailed and up-to-date. Remember that LinkedIn allows companies to post job openings and search for candidates, while applicants can use it to showcase their skills, network with professionals, and apply directly to job opportunities.

Another, rather suprising, way to discover job opportunities is through pop-up ads while browsing the internet. Of course, to take advantage of this, you need to disable your ad blocker.

A Final Piece of Advice

Avoid narrowing your search criteria too much on any job site. These sites don’t have search algorithms as sophisticated as Google’s, and companies often don’t fill out job listings perfectly. For example, recently a company accidentally wrote ‘February’ in the job title field instead of the start date 😊.

By following these strategies, you can effectively navigate the job market and increase your chances of finding the perfect role.
